Assassin's Creed Shadows: Cultural Discovery Locations & Interactive Tracking Guide

Cultural Discoveries in Assassin's Creed Shadows are the 190 floating historical markers scattered across feudal Japan — glowing collectibles that unlock lore entries in the Codex covering the landmarks, historical figures, and traditions of the Sengoku period.

Each one grants XP on collection and adds a named entry to Naoe and Yasuke's shared Animus database, covering everything from Hattori Hanzo and Oda Nobunaga to Origami, Sumo, and the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest.

All 190 confirmed locations are documented on Map Master's Assassin's Creed Shadows Japan map.

Three Types of Cultural Discovery

  • Marvels of Japan — real-world Sengoku-era landmarks: Osaka Castle, Himeji Castle, Azuchi Castle, Sumiyoshi Shrine, Honno-ji Temple, Arashiyama Forest, Enryaku-ji Temple, Hongan-ji, and dozens more. These are most commonly found at the physical location the entry describes — often on the ground in front of a gate, in a courtyard, or floating beside a notable structure.

  • Historical Characters — named figures from Sengoku history: Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Akechi Mitsuhide, Yasuke (Naoe's companion himself), Hattori Hanzo, Lady Nene, Hosokawa Gracia, Kano Eitoku, the Jesuit missionaries Luis Frois and Alessandro Valignano, and Fujibayashi Yasutoyo (Naoe's ancestor, with direct narrative relevance). These entries appear near locations associated with each figure's historical life.

  • Cultural Topics — traditional practices, arts, and concepts: Samurai, Bushido, Origami, Sumo, Calligraphy, Tea Production, Sake Production, Japanese Gardens, Noh Theater, Music in Medieval Japan, and many more. These float near places where the practice was historically observed.

The Floating Marker Mechanic

Cultural Discoveries don't sit on tables or in chests — they float as glowing markers in the world and must be approached within range to collect. The majority float within easy reach at ground level, by roadsides, in courtyards, or near shrine gates. Several require parkour:

  • Yamashiro — floating at the top of the Kiyomizudera Pagoda roof
  • Chikubu-shima — floating in the corner of the top roof of the Chikubu Pagoda
  • Omi — floating in the corner of the top roof of the Chikubu Pagoda
  • Harima — floating on the top roof of a building outside
  • Fujiwara No Chikata (the hardest) — floating high above the Bloody Head Well lake; must climb the large bent tree on the hill to the east of the pond before it can be scanned

How to Reveal Them Efficiently

Syncing a Viewpoint automatically marks all Cultural Discoveries in the surrounding area on the map. This is the fastest reveal method — prioritise Viewpoints in each region before sweeping for Cultural Discoveries.

Many entries cluster near Shrines, Temples, and Kofun tombs — the co-location is consistent enough that completing those nearby activities (which DO give Knowledge Points) simultaneously sweeps the Cultural Discoveries in the same area.

Lost Pages, collected at Temples, follow the same geographic clustering logic.

Some entries are unlocked automatically through main story progress — particularly the Historical Character entries connected to major story events. The story-unlocked entries appear in the Codex without requiring physical discovery.
